NINE WICKET CHALLENGE - 16 February 2002
An especially fun tournament was hosted this year which we are calling 'The nine wicket challenge'.  (We plan on calling it the Nine Wicket State Championship next year.)  Eight players from Venture Out and eight players from the ACC mixed together to learn a new set of rules (at least for us).  Many long standing members participated in this event - Don Johnson, Mike Dodt, Ray Hamm and Stan Patmor.  Mel Fenske was our tournament director and ensured that each player teamed up with a new partner each round.  The players with the most points at the end of the three rounds of play played in the grand finale - this time the best record of the ACC, Ray Hamm and John Fournier, teamed against Vern Paulson and Arnold Paukaw.  The Venture Out team took the championship promising to return next year for another challenge.

AMERICAN SINGLES - 23 February 2002
The American rules singles championship is one of the clubs long standing tournaments in preparation for the Arizona Open.  The champion in this years play was Pat Roach after defeating Don Fournier.  Tom and Jan Ross graciously offered the ACC an introduction to their new championship court.  The court is beautifully set at the base of north of Camelback Mtn.  It is both fast and tough.  Just what doctor Ross ordered.

The format was American rules level play with two blocks round robin play followed with the winners of each block in a final playoff game.

ASSOCIATION CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP - 1/2 June 2002
The club championship is played near the end of our croquet club year which is marked by the annual meeting held in the month of June.  The club championship is played straight up, no handicaps, Association advanced rules.  The tournament marks the highlight of the year for our club.  The winner is crowned the club champion.  We tried to start a second flight championship tournament for the second year, but the interest level for this tournament is not here yet.  Jay Murphy was the sole exception and is therefore crowned the second flight champion.

We played the club championship with a block of 6 players.  The format was bit unusual and bears a short explanation.  Each player played between 3 and 4 games, most playing 2 on Saturday and 2 on Sunday.  One player played only on Sunday.  The scores were calculated by taking the best of their 3 games played.  I include both the summary and the game scores.  The format was designed to meet two constraints: figure out a way to play nor more than 2 to 3 games a day, plus allow Jacques Fournier to play only on Sunday (he was arriving from Virginia the day before), but instead of Jacques, we played against his schoolmate, Zach Rawling.  Zach and Jacques recently won the club teams in Palm Beach, Florida.  We welcome Zach into our croquet family.  Congratulations to Ren Kraft, our new club champion.
