Players from Maine to Mexico, from Palm Beach to
Seattle and points in between came to enjoy a week in
the desert sun. The competition was keen and the
difference between many games was just a point.

The fun began on Monday night with a great Mexican
dinner and cocktails at the Mission Hill Resort Tennis
Club where everyone got their schedules. Games began
Tuesday morning on three courts at Missions Hills and
two more courts at Indian Ridge. Both venues are
beautiful but the desert roadrunners do add a nice
touch as they run along the walls and even across the
courts at Indian Ridge. Thursday night we all went to
Ellery McClatchey's home for a 5 star meal of boneless
rack of lamb. After dinner Pat Apple and Nancy Deupree
presented each player with an engraved pewter cup from
the Mission Hills Croquet Club. Saturday we dined
courtside on grilled salmon while watching the finals.
Some players gained handicap tracking points and some
lost tracking points but we all probably gained pounds
from the superb hospitality shown by our hosts.

The Bagby flight back to Alabama might have had trouble
going through security with all the silver (Four 1st
place trophies) they were taking home. Cindy also had
56 new handicap tracking points to pack along. If you
find a "Bagby" in your block at your next tournament
consider yourself warned.

After winning his block and also collecting silver in
doubles, Jim and Phyllis Butts were last seen packing
his trophies and mallet as they headed east to the
Phoenix Open in search of even more trophies.

The tournament format was 3 blocks of singles and 2
Waterford doubles blocks. Each player had 2 singles and
1 doubles game each day. There was a seeded playoff for
the top 3 places in each singles block but the order of
finish was the same as it had been in the block play.
