Archie Gray Burchfield Sept 1937 - Feb 2005 STAMPING GROUND - Archie Gray Burchfield Jr., 67, Stamping Ground, KY, and the husband of Betty Metts Burchfield, died Wed. Feb. 16, 2005 at his home. He was born in Springhill, TN on Sept. 20, 1937 and was the son of the late Archie Gray and Juanita James Burchfield Sr. He was a farmer and a member of the Minorsville Christian Church, were he served as a deacon. He was a Kentucky Colonel and member of the Masonic Lodge. He was the reigning Kentucky croquet state champion and won 16 state championships, nine singles and seven doubles. He was in the Kentucky Croquet Hall of Fame. In 1982, he won nationals (with Mark) in New York's Central Park. In 1985, he won club team nationals in Palm Beach, Fla., In 1987, he won nationals (with Damon) in Newport, R.I., and also won club team nationals in Palm Beach, Fla. Burchfield also won the International Croquet Tournament. He was in the U.S.C.A. Croquet Hall of Fame and was an international ambassador for the U.S.C.A. He was featured in various magazine articles, including the New Yorker, Sports Illustrated, People and Connoisseur. He was also featured in several television programs, including On the Road Again, The Pat Sajak Show, Lifestyle On Sports and Portrait of America. Survivors include four children, David Gray (Cindi) Burchfield, Mark Coleman (Jennifer) Burchfield, Shari Elizabeth (David) Coleman, all of Stamping Ground; and Reba Carol (Jimbo) Lewis, of Frankfort; 12 grandchildren, Jennifer, David, Markus, Travis, Justin and Ashley Burchfield, Jami and Jimmy Lewis, Joy, Hope, Buddy and Kacey Coleman; a mother-in-law, Opal Metts; and a sister-in-law, Ruby Tuttle. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, 2005, at Tucker, Yocum & Wilson Funeral Home, with Minister Wayne Smith and Minister Tom Kelly officiating. Burial will be in Masonic Cemetery in Stamping Ground. Casket bearers will be David, Mark and Butch Burchfield, Jimbo Lewis, David Coleman, Alvin Tuttle, Steve Popp and Lloyd Luttrell. Honorary casket bearers will be the Kentucky and U.S.C.A. croquet players. Visitation will 2-4 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
