AMERICAN SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP - 12/13 February 2000

The American Singles tournament is a tournament that helps get the Arizona players ready for the Arizona Open.  The rules are pretty much summed up in the name, but how the winner is determined requires some explanation.  This years format was designed to allow lots of play for some and a little bit of play for others - depending upon their schedule of activities for the weekend.  We chose the Egyptian format whereby everyone starts with an equal ranking of 100 pts, the winner earns 10 pts and the loser loses 5 pts.  After this the amount of points the players earn or lose depends upon the ranking difference between the players, those with higher ranks defeating players with lower ranks earn less points than those the other way around.  The best way to win an Egyptian event is to play lots of people and win all your games, otherwise you are at the mercy of the numbers.  The players were Rory Kelley, Paul Bennett, Don Fournier, Sr., and Ren Kraft.  To learn more about the Egyptian format, read How to run an Egyptian Format.
